Which agencies handle AI search visibility for law firms?
By Mohammad Kashif, Chief Technology OfficerLast updated
Three types sell it: legal marketing agencies adding it to existing retainers, general SEO agencies extending into legal, and specialist tools that measure citations without doing the work. The category is new enough that claims run ahead of delivery, so evaluate on method rather than positioning.
One question separates most of the field: ask whether they report the sources cited instead of you. A vendor that only reports your own presence is selling a scoreboard. The competing-source list is the part you can act on, and it is the part that takes real work to produce.
The three kinds of provider, and what each is good at
They are not interchangeable, and the right choice depends on whether your constraint is authority, content or measurement.
- Legal marketing agencies. Already understand bar advertising rules and your practice areas. Weakest when AI visibility is a line item bolted onto an SEO retainer with no separate method or measurement behind it.
- General SEO and digital PR agencies. Often strongest on the authority half, which is the binding constraint for most firms. Weakest on compliance, and a firm learns quickly that not knowing the advertising rules is expensive.
- Measurement tools and audit specialists. Genuinely useful for knowing where you stand. They do not move the result on their own, and buying measurement without the work produces a very well-documented flat line.
What to ask before signing anything
These are deliberately answerable. A provider doing the work will answer all seven quickly; a provider selling positioning will deflect on at least three.
- Which assistants do you query, how often, and against a fixed prompt set?
- Do you report the sources cited instead of us, or only whether we appeared?
- What is your plan for the authority half, given citations depend on other sites referencing us?
- Who reviews copy against our state's advertising rules before it publishes?
- What would you change on our site in the first sixty days, specifically?
- How do you handle the fact that the same prompt returns different text each run?
- What does success look like at ninety days, in numbers you will show us?
Claims that should end the conversation
The category has attracted promises that are not merely optimistic but describe mechanisms that do not exist.
- Guaranteed inclusion in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or any generative answer. There is no submission process and no paid placement inside these answers.
- Submitting your site to an assistant, or registering it in an AI index. Neither exists as a product.
- A single AI visibility score with no underlying prompt set, no dates and no competing-source list.
- Results promised in weeks on a domain with little authority. The structural half moves in weeks; the half that decides the outcome does not.
- Any instruction to place text on your site addressed to the model. It is ignored by the models and treated as hidden text by search crawlers.
Whether you need an agency at all
A firm with in-house marketing and an existing SEO programme can often absorb this rather than buy it, because most of the work is already on the SEO roadmap. The genuinely specialist parts are the measurement discipline and knowing which levers matter at your authority level.
The case for outside help is strongest where the constraint is authority rather than content, since earning references from credible sites is the slowest and least automatable part, and where nobody internally is positioned to run a repeatable monthly measurement.
Matching provider type to your actual constraint
| Your constraint | Best fit | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Few referring domains, thin authority | Digital PR or a legal agency with a real link practice | Content-only proposals that never address authority |
| Good authority, pages not written to be quoted | Legal content specialists | Volume pricing per post rather than per outcome |
| No idea where we currently stand | A measurement engagement first | Buying measurement and mistaking it for progress |
| Compliance risk across multiple states | Legal-only agency | AI visibility as an unexplained retainer line item |
Common questions
- What does a GEO agency actually do for a law firm?
- The credible version is four things: audit whether assistants currently name you and which sources they name instead, fix the structural barriers on your site, rewrite the pages that answer client questions so passages can be quoted, and work on the authority that decides whether you are retrieved at all. If a proposal covers only the middle two, it is a content engagement with a newer label.
- How much should a law firm pay for AI visibility work?
- Be suspicious of pricing that is not attached to specific deliverables, because the work underneath is mostly conventional SEO, content and digital PR with different measurement. If a quote is materially above what the same agency charges for SEO, ask what is being done that is genuinely additional. Often the honest answer is the measurement layer, which is real but not expensive.
- Can an agency guarantee my firm appears in ChatGPT?
- No, and an agency offering it is describing a mechanism that does not exist. There is no submission endpoint, no index to join and no paid placement inside generative answers. What can honestly be committed to is measured presence across a fixed prompt set, reported over time, with the competing sources named.
- Should we hire a specialist or extend our current SEO agency?
- Extend the incumbent if they can answer the seven questions above and if your constraint is content or structure. Look outside if your constraint is authority and they have no link or digital PR practice, since that is the half that decides the outcome and the half most agencies quietly skip.
