Structured data labels content rather than creating it. Why does this distinction matter?

By Mohammad Kashif, Chief Technology OfficerLast updated

Because markup describing something a visitor cannot see is a guidelines violation, not a shortcut. Structured data tells a machine what is already on the page. It adds no facts, and marking up absent content risks a manual action that removes you from results entirely.

This is the single most common way law firm sites get into trouble with markup: review stars for reviews that are not displayed, FAQ markup for questions that appear nowhere, an attorney node for a lawyer who left. Each one validates cleanly and each one is a liability.

What the distinction actually means

Think of a page as a document and structured data as the labels on it. The labels say this block is a question and this one is its answer, this name is an attorney, this business is a law firm in Tampa. They make existing content unambiguous to something that cannot see layout or infer from design.

What they cannot do is add anything. A page with no FAQ does not gain one by carrying FAQPage markup, it gains a contradiction between what it claims and what it shows. Search engines resolve that contradiction against the site.

Why this matters more for law firms than most businesses

Two reasons compound. Legal queries carry a higher verification burden, so assistants are more conservative about naming a specific professional than a restaurant, and a mismatch between markup and page is exactly the kind of signal that makes a model drop a claim rather than risk it.

The second is regulatory. Several state bars restrict how client testimonials and outcome claims may be presented. Markup is a public claim in a machine-readable format, which makes an advertising-rules problem easier to find and harder to explain than the same claim buried in body copy.

The four that catch firms out

Each of these validates without error and each is still wrong.

  • Review or rating markup for reviews the firm collected about itself, or for reviews not shown on the page. Self-serving review markup is against Google's guidelines.
  • FAQPage on a page with no visible questions and answers.
  • Person nodes for lawyers no longer at the firm, or with bar admissions that have lapsed.
  • A street address for a virtual or coworking office. That asserts a place of business, and it becomes a consistency problem the moment a directory scrapes it.

The test to apply before shipping any markup

Read the rendered page as a visitor. If every claim in the markup is something you can point at on screen, it is labelling. If any claim is not visible, it is invention, and it should either be added to the page or removed from the markup. There is no third option worth taking.

Common questions

Can structured data improve my rankings on its own?
Not directly. It is not a ranking factor in the way relevance and authority are. What it does is make a page unambiguous, which affects how often you are attributed correctly and whether you are eligible for certain result formats. Treat it as removing reasons to be passed over rather than as a lever that lifts position.
What happens if my markup describes content that is not on the page?
At best the markup is ignored. At worst it earns a manual action for structured data spam, which removes the site's eligibility for rich results and can affect ranking. Google publishes this as a specific violation, and the fix is always the same: either show the content or drop the markup.
Is FAQ markup still worth adding if Google shows fewer FAQ rich results?
Yes, for a different reason than it was originally added. The rich-result display has been reduced, but the markup still tells assistants which spans are questions and answers, and question-and-answer pairs are among the most readily quoted formats in generative answers. The visual payoff shrank; the machine-readability payoff did not.
