What is the difference between answer engines and search engines?
By Mohammad Kashif, Chief Technology OfficerLast updated
A search engine returns a ranked list and lets you choose. An answer engine composes a response and chooses for you, naming a few sources. The practical difference for a law firm is that there is no second place and often no click.
On a ranked list, positions two through ten still receive traffic. In a composed answer, the firms not named are absent entirely, and the prospect frequently never visits a website at all before deciding who to contact.
What actually changes for a law firm
The shift is less about technology than about how many firms get considered, and at what point the prospect stops looking.
- Fewer firms are surfaced. A page of ten blue links becomes an answer naming two or three sources.
- The click often does not happen. The prospect reads the answer and contacts a firm directly, which breaks the traffic-based reporting most firms rely on.
- Being wrong is worse than being absent. An assistant that states an incorrect fee, deadline or practice area for your firm creates a problem no ranking report will show you.
- Corroboration matters more than presentation. A ranked list will show a page on the strength of its own signals; a composed answer prefers claims confirmed somewhere else.
What does not change
More than the category's marketing suggests. Both kinds of system retrieve from an index, both weigh authority heavily, and both need to be able to read the page. A firm that ranks nowhere is rarely quoted anywhere, which is why the two disciplines share a foundation rather than replacing one another.
The genuinely new work sits at the passage level: writing so that a single paragraph survives being lifted out of the page, and making every claim checkable enough to pass a corroboration step. That is an addition to an SEO programme, not a substitute for one.
How to measure something with no ranking position
Position does not exist in an answer, so the reporting has to change shape. Three measures carry the load.
- Presence rate. Across a fixed prompt set run repeatedly, how often are you named at all. A single run measures noise, because these systems do not return the same answer twice.
- Competing sources. Which domains are quoted instead of you. This is the actionable output and it doubles as an outreach list.
- Accuracy. When you are named, is what the assistant says about you correct. This is the measure firms skip and the one with real downside.
On the terminology
Answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization and AI search optimization are used more or less interchangeably by the people selling them, and the distinctions drawn between them are usually marketing rather than method. If a vendor separates them sharply, the useful question is what they would do differently under each label.
We have written the terminology comparison out at length elsewhere rather than repeating it here.
Two models of the same moment
| Search engine | Answer engine | |
|---|---|---|
| Output | Ranked list of links | Composed answer with a few sources |
| Firms surfaced | Ten or more | Two or three |
| Value of position two | Real traffic | Little, if you are not named |
| Click | Expected | Often does not happen |
| Unit of selection | The page | The passage |
| How you measure | Position and clicks | Presence rate, competing sources, accuracy |
Common questions
- What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?
- SEO optimises to appear in a ranked list of links. AEO, answer engine optimization, came from optimising for featured snippets and direct answers. GEO, generative engine optimization, is the newer term for systems that compose an answer rather than quoting one source. In practice AEO and GEO describe the same work and the same techniques, and both depend on the SEO foundation underneath them.
- Are answer engines replacing search engines for legal queries?
- Not replacing, but taking a growing share of the research step, especially the informational questions people ask before they are ready to hire. Traditional search still dominates hire-intent queries and the local map pack still drives a large share of calls. The sensible read is that the research phase is moving while the decision phase has not.
- If nobody clicks, how does a citation help my firm?
- Because the prospect still has to contact someone, and they contact a firm the answer named. The mechanism moves from click to recall, which is why accuracy matters as much as presence: a citation that misstates your practice area or jurisdiction can send the call elsewhere despite naming you.
- Should we stop tracking rankings?
- No. Rankings still predict retrieval, so they remain a leading indicator of whether you can be cited at all. Add presence and accuracy measures alongside them rather than swapping one for the other, or you lose the ability to tell whether a citation problem is actually a ranking problem.
