How to get your law firm cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews
By Mohammad Kashif, Chief Technology OfficerLast updated
These two work differently. Google AI Overviews draws almost entirely from pages already ranking in Google, so conventional ranking is the entry ticket. ChatGPT runs its own search and leans harder on pages that answer the question outright.
The practical consequence: a firm ranking on Google page two is effectively invisible to AI Overviews no matter how well written the page is, while the same page can be quoted by ChatGPT if it answers the question more directly than the pages above it.
How to get your law firm in Google AI Overviews: earn the ranking first
Overviews are assembled from Google's existing index, and in practice the sources quoted are drawn from pages already visible for the query or a close variant. That makes the sequence unambiguous: ranking is not optional groundwork, it is the qualifying round.
- Rank for the underlying question, not just the commercial term. Overviews trigger on informational phrasing far more often than on hire-intent phrasing.
- Give the page a passage that answers the question in two or three sentences, near the top, under a heading that matches the question.
- Ship FAQPage and LegalService markup. It does not create eligibility, but it removes ambiguity about what the page is.
- Watch that an Overview appearing for your terms can reduce clicks even when you are quoted. Track citations separately from traffic, or you will misread a win as a loss.
Law firm visibility in ChatGPT: answer better than the page above you
ChatGPT Search issues its own queries and reads the candidates, which makes passage quality matter more relative to raw position. A page at position six that states the answer plainly can be quoted over a page at position two that buries it under an introduction.
- Lead with the answer. The first forty words decide whether a passage is usable.
- Name specifics a model can attribute. A statute, a deadline, a county, a dollar range.
- Keep one idea per paragraph so a quote does not need the surrounding text to make sense.
- Make sure GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are allowed. They are separate user agents from Googlebot and are blocked by default in some security configurations.
What both systems reward
Underneath the differences the overlap is large, which is why the work compounds rather than splitting in two.
- Corroboration. Claims confirmed by bar directories, court records or press survive; claims that appear only on your own site often get dropped.
- Consistency. One firm name, one address, one set of practice areas, everywhere a machine can read them.
- Recency. A page updated this quarter beats an identical page last touched in 2023.
- Clarity about who you are. A model that cannot tell which firm the page belongs to will not attribute a recommendation to you.
What does not transfer between them
Do not assume a result in one means anything about the other. Coverage differs, indexes differ, and a firm can be quoted by ChatGPT while absent from Overviews for the same question simply because its ranking in Google is not high enough to qualify. Measure each one separately, or you will attribute a change to work that had nothing to do with it.
Two systems, two entry requirements
| Google AI Overviews | ChatGPT Search | |
|---|---|---|
| Source pool | Google's index, weighted to what already ranks | Its own search, plus training data |
| Entry requirement | Rank for the underlying query | Answer the question better than the alternatives |
| Biggest lever | Conventional ranking work | Answer-first passage structure |
| Crawler to allow | Googlebot | GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot |
| Click effect | Often reduces clicks even when you are quoted | Usually no click at all |
Common questions
- Does ranking on Google page one guarantee a citation in AI Overviews?
- No. Ranking qualifies you to be considered; it does not select you. Among the pages ranking, Overviews tend to quote the ones that state an answer plainly under a heading matching the question. A page that ranks third and buries its answer is regularly passed over for one that ranks seventh and leads with it.
- Why does ChatGPT cite my competitor but not my firm?
- Usually one of three reasons. Their page answers the question in a self-contained passage and yours does not; their firm details are corroborated by sources the model trusts and yours are inconsistent; or they are referenced by sites that already get quoted in your market and you are not. Check them in that order, because the first is the cheapest to fix.
- Do AI Overviews reduce traffic to law firm websites?
- Frequently, yes, including on queries where you are the cited source. This is why citation and traffic have to be tracked separately. A quarter where Overview citations rise and clicks fall is not a failure, but it will look like one on a traffic-only dashboard.
- Should my firm optimise for ChatGPT or for Google first?
- Google, for most firms. The work that earns Google rankings is also what qualifies you for Overviews and feeds ChatGPT's retrieval, so it is the shared foundation. Answer-first rewriting is the cheap addition that helps both, and it is worth doing at the same time rather than as a separate project.
