How do I make sure my law firm appears when people search in AI?

Work in this order: make the site machine-readable, rewrite the pages that answer client questions, make your firm details identical everywhere, then earn citations from sites that already get quoted. The first three take weeks. The fourth decides the outcome.
Sequence matters more than effort. A firm that earns twenty credible references and writes plainly will be cited ahead of a firm that published two hundred pages nobody links to, because retrieval pulls from what already ranks.
Step 1: make the site readable by a machine
Before anything else, confirm an assistant can actually read the page. This is the cheapest work on the list and the most commonly skipped.
- Fetch each key page as a crawler would and confirm the content is in the raw HTML, not injected after JavaScript runs.
- Ship LegalService for the firm, Person (with worksFor) for each lawyer, and FAQPage on any question block.
- Allow the AI crawlers in robots.txt. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot are separate user agents and blocking them is usually accidental.
- Publish an llms.txt at the site root describing what the firm does and linking the pages worth reading.
Step 2: rewrite the pages that answer real questions
Assistants quote passages, not pages. A page can be thorough and still never be quoted because no single paragraph stands on its own once lifted out of context.
- Put the answer in the first forty words. No preamble, no credentials, no story first.
- Write headings as the question a client would type, in their words rather than legal terms.
- Keep paragraphs self-contained. Assume any one of them might be quoted alone.
- Use checkable specifics. Jurisdictions, filing deadlines, statute names and dollar ranges survive verification. Adjectives do not.
Step 3: make your details agree everywhere
An assistant that cannot confirm a detail across sources will usually drop it rather than risk it. The most common failure is a firm whose own site disagrees with its Google Business Profile, or whose name is spelled three ways across directories.
Pick one canonical firm name, one address format and one phone number, then make every profile match exactly. Bar directory listings and the Business Profile matter more here than any page you control, because they are what a model checks you against.
Step 4: earn citations, which is the slow part
Steps one through three remove the reasons not to cite you. Step four is what actually gets you cited, and it is measured in quarters rather than weeks. There is no version of this that skips it.
- Get referenced by sites that already get quoted in your practice area and city. Local press, bar associations, legal publications, university clinics.
- Publish something worth referencing rather than something written to rank. Original data, a clear explainer of a local rule change, a genuinely useful template.
- Keep reviews current across platforms. Recency counts, and a stale profile underperforms a thinner but active one.
How to know whether any of it worked
Write down ten questions a client would actually ask, run them monthly across two or three assistants, and record whether you are named and which sources were quoted instead. That list of competing sources is the useful output: it tells you who owns the answer today, and it doubles as the outreach list for step four.
What each step costs you, and how quickly it shows
| Step | Effort | Shows up in | Skippable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Machine-readable site | Low, mostly one-time | Days after a recrawl | No, it gates the rest |
| Answer-first rewriting | Medium, per page | Weeks | No |
| Detail consistency | Low, tedious | Weeks to months | No |
| Earning citations | High, ongoing | Quarters | No, and nothing substitutes |
| Measuring monthly | Low | Immediately | Yes, but then you are guessing |
Common questions
- How long before my law firm shows up in AI search results?
- The structural work shows within weeks of a recrawl, because it only requires the assistant to re-read pages it can already reach. Being named in answers where you currently are not is usually a matter of quarters, because that depends on other sites referencing you. A firm with an established site and current reviews moves sooner than a new domain, for the same reasons it ranks sooner.
- Do I need to block or allow AI crawlers in robots.txt?
- Allow them if you want to be cited. GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot are distinct user agents, and a default configuration or a security plugin can block them without anyone noticing. Blocking them does not protect your content from being summarised; it mostly removes you from the answers.
- Is publishing more blog posts the fastest way to appear in AI answers?
- Rarely. Retrieval pulls from pages that already rank, so on a site with few referring domains extra posts produce more pages nothing retrieves. The same hours spent earning references from sites that already get quoted move the result considerably further.
- Does my Google Business Profile affect whether AI assistants name my firm?
- Yes, more than most firms expect. Several assistants lean on Google's own data for local business facts, and the Business Profile is often what a model checks your site against. If the two disagree on name, address or practice areas, the conflict is a reason to drop you rather than a detail to reconcile.
