FindLaw runs one of the largest and most-visited lawyer directories in the United States, covering attorneys across more than a hundred practice areas. Its practice-area content ranks everywhere in Google, and "best lawyer near me" lists across the web routinely link back to FindLaw practitioner pages. As of the end of 2024, FindLaw is part of Internet Brands' Martindale-Avvo legal portfolio — the same network as Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Nolo, and Lawyers.com — after two decades under Thomson Reuters.
Like the other majors, FindLaw frequently auto-generates attorney listings from bar data. That means your listing may already exist with whatever address and phone number were on file when it was created — which, for many attorneys, is an office they left years ago. Claiming is free, and unlike Avvo, FindLaw's free basic listing allows a link to your website.
Step 1: Search for your existing listing
Go to lawyers.findlaw.com and search your name and location. Note what you find: an existing listing you'll claim, or nothing, in which case you'll create one through the same portal below.
Step 2: Register with FindLaw Profile Update
FindLaw manages attorney self-service through a dedicated portal called Profile Update:
- Go to profileupdate.findlaw.com (the welcome page lives at pu.findlaw.com/welcome).
- Under "Don't have an account?", click Register here and create your account.
- Use an email address you control long-term — this account is how you'll maintain the listing for years.
Step 3: Find and claim your profile
- From the portal, use the profile search: enter your name and requested details, then click Find.
- In the search results, click Claim next to your profile.
- Complete the verification steps to confirm you're the listed attorney (bar credentials are the typical proof).
On later visits, you'll sign in at the same welcome page and land on a Manage Your Profiles screen.
Step 4: Update and publish
Once claimed, work through every section, then publish the profile to the FindLaw Lawyer Directory:
- Contact information first. Your canonical firm name, address, and phone — matching your website and Google Business Profile exactly. FindLaw listings are notorious for carrying outdated phone numbers from old bar records; fix this before anything else.
- Add your website URL. This is included with the free listing — don't leave the field empty.
- Practice areas, selected precisely. FindLaw profiles allow detailed practice descriptions, so use them to say something specific: the client types you serve, the matters you handle, the geography you cover.
- Credentials: bar admissions, education, honors, publications, and speaking engagements. Each field is information both prospective clients and AI search tools read.
- Professional headshot, if your listing tier displays one.
A word on FindLaw's paid products
FindLaw will offer you premium directory placement, websites, and broader marketing packages — historically sold on long contracts at significant cost, with results that vary a lot by market. Our standing advice: the free claimed profile delivers the citation value and the website link, which is what most firms actually need from FindLaw. Evaluate paid placement only against measured lead data in your specific market, never as a default.
Maintenance
Log back into Profile Update whenever your contact details change and at least once a year. Because FindLaw is now inside the Martindale-Avvo network, keeping this listing accurate reinforces the same NAP data flowing through its sibling sites.
FAQ
Is a FindLaw listing free? Yes — the basic directory listing, claimed and updated through FindLaw Profile Update, is free and includes your website link. Premium placement and marketing services are optional paid products.
I found a listing with my old firm's information. Can I fix it? Yes — that's exactly what claiming is for. Register at profileupdate.findlaw.com, claim the listing, and correct it. Stale auto-generated data hurts you more than no listing at all.
Who owns FindLaw now? Internet Brands acquired FindLaw from Thomson Reuters in a deal announced in October 2024, bringing it into the Martindale-Avvo family alongside Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Nolo, and Lawyers.com.
